Passenger cargo ship, SS Navasota, 8,795grt, (Royal Mail Lines Ltd) had sailed in ballast from Liverpool on the 3rd December 1939 in the 7 ship Convoy OB-46. Like most of the OB series of Convoy's the ships would disperse at a given point and head for their individual ports. The Navasota was to head to the port of Buenos Aries once the Convoy had dispersed which was due to take place on the 7th December. On the 5th December the Navasota was attacked by U-47 about 150 miles West of Bishop Rock, she was torpedoed and sunk in position 50' 43N 10' 16W. The Captain, Charles J. Goble, and 36 crew were lost. 37 crew were rescued by the Destroyer HMS Escapade and another 8 by the Merchant ship Clan Farquhar and landed in Cape Town.
